Ork Boyz: Running Legs Poses from Kromlech

I recently decided to take advantage of the November Black Friday sales at Kromlech.eu to buy some Ork running legs and running bodies. I've had my eye on these pieces for many years and have wanted to add more diversity to the poses available in my large boyz mobs. The typical image of an Ork horde is that of a mass of charging rampaging bodies, all dashing towards the enemy as quickly as their stubby legs can carry them. Why then is it that the otherwise excellent Ork Boyz kit has precisely zero running poses? To correct this I bought roughly 20 sets of legs and rustled up enough arms, heads and torsos to finish the rest.

I decided to try a new technique of batch painting 10 boyz at once. I began by painting the bases and assembling the legs and torsos. I undercoated the torsos black and attached them with a wire pin to the base. I then set about painting all the separate parts individually starting with the torsos and legs, then the arms then finally the heads. It took the best part of 5 days to completely finish them but I must say, I liked being able to access all the areas of detail more easily. I think I'll continue to use this technique in the future but lower the model count to batches of 5 at a time. I did take forever!

I'm very pleased with the finished results. The boyz blend in perfectly with my other, more stock posed, boyz and help to create the sense of anarchy large mobz of boyz would eschew. These 10 complete a mob of 30 with another mob of 30 left to paint. Gork help me!

Big Mek Sprokit and some shooty Shoota Boyz

Hello dear readers and good evening. I felt too much time had passed since my last offering on this blog. I now find myself in the curious position of teaching 3 year-olds, which comes with its many challenges and rewards. Unfortunately, one common challenge is finding any time to indulge in my favourite hobby of painting and gaming. Fortunately, however, I have found a local club and have sourced myself a generous ride so hopefully I shall be back in the gaming saddle after an all too long absence.

Having said that, I have found at least a little time since my last post to paint some Shoota Boyz and an old Big Mek.

First up is Big Mek Sprokit, a metal model equipped with a kustom force-field. I have always loved this model and in battle it is a very useful unit. I used to use him up front in a battle wagon, providing killa kans and trucks with the save. However, under the new rules (yuck!), I'll be fielding him at the back with my five grot kannonz. Regardless, he's a brilliant model and I'm very pleased with the re-paint job.

I replaced the original base with a fresh new one since the original was covered in very course ballast and badly placed wreckage. I then updated all the colours to match my most current Ork models, lightening the skin tone and adding more Goff checks. Finally, I brightened up the generally drab Goff scheme with brass patina and rust weathering powder. I really think these little flashes of colour make my Goff Orks pop.

Let me know what you think of him in the comments below. I'm always trying to improve my techniques.

Next up is the beginnings of another 30 strong Shoota Boyz mob. I picked up an old boz of plastic/metal hybrid Stikk Bommaz from the bring-and-buy sale at the Birmingham Games Expo this year for £6!! This prompted me to get building another mob and to use some of the Armorcast muzzle flash effects I bought years ago! I really, really like the effect and I'll be distributing flashes amongst my other finished mobs at a roughly 50/50 proportion. I'll take time, but it's worth it I think. Otherwise, I painted these boyz in exactly the same way as before. Five down, 25 more to go!

The Big Boss on Bike made mostly of Trukk!

Last week saw me get cracking on the warboss on bike, which was slightly more challenging than the nob bikers in the sense that I wanted his bike to be mostly built from trukk parts?! It was the only way I felt his bulk would be accommodated so I set about mounting the engine block and large wheels from the trukk kit onto a very cut down deff kopta chassis.

I kept the deff kopta legs because they aren't actually all that much smaller than the normal warboss legs. Instead I raised the torso and re-sculpted the lower back just to give him some extra height and prevent the legs from making him look a little misshapen  (then again if you spent your whole life on a bike I guess you'd have short legs too!).

The finecast parts, although in pretty terrible condition, were a God send as it meant I could cut the parts to fit with ease. The fact they are so light also helps to prevent this guy from falling over, which I'm certain would happen a lot on the battlefield if he was all metal. All in all I'm very pleased with the result and I'm sure he's going to turn heads (and a few stomachs) on the field!

Here's a size comparison with the previous Nob bikers! He's an absolute beast!

In the Smurf Case: Ork Storm Boyz Finished

I finally finished off the two ork storm boyz after a session of watching snooker. The pictures arn't great and I got a little bit of clouding on the one side from the matt varnish but hey hoe, you win some and lose some.

On the Smurf Bench: Ork Storm Boyz Progress

Just a quick update from me today, having only just gotten back from Whitby. They don't look like they have changed much but much detailing has been done.

The Final Loota Takes the stage and to the Field of Battle!

Hello friends, I hope you are well.

It has been quite difficult for me to find the time to finish this project but I'm glad to say it is finally within sight (that is if we ignore the fact that they all still need to be painted!).

I got a big bag of eldar bits from a friend of mine at club, which inspired me to follow the energy laser theme once more. This time I wanted a plethora of energy weapons all powered by a dawn of war style generator. I still have the greenstuffing to do and I also want to wire it in considerably more just to emphasize the powered aspect of the weapon.

Anyway, I present to you gentle folks, the 12th and final member of my loota squad!

It Stopz Da Shellz Gettin' in Me Mouth See...

Its been a perfect day today here in Aberystwyth but did the sun tempt me out to the beach? Not for a second. Nope, instead I did this. Enjoy.

Naahh Dis Littul Killa Neva Getz Hot.......sssssttttt AHHH!

Here's the work in progress shots of the latest of the lootas. I'm up to eight now so a full squad is just over the horizon. Unless I decide to boost it up to 15, in which case I'm just over half way. Anyway, that's enough maths, lets take a look at the dakka.

I also replaced the barrel on the previous loota, which I felt was too weedy and didn't fit the stature of an ork looted weapon. Unfortunately, the ammo feeder now looks to small. Hmm more work to be done I think. I also want to add some straps, more wires and possibly replace the head. The horns are a bit too much.
